Celebrate National Oyster Day with $1 Rappahannock Oysters!

We’re excited to celebrate National Oyster Day sustainably this year by shining a spotlight on our friends at Rappahannock Oyster Company. This special day, August 5th, is a perfect opportunity to dig into some delicious oysters while learning about our shared commitment to eco-friendly practices and the exceptional journey these oysters take from farm to table.

A Legacy of Sustainable Oyster Farming

Rappahannock Oyster Company, founded in 1899, has become a leader in sustainable oyster farming through their innovative practices, moving away from traditional hunter-gatherer methods that once led to the collapse of oyster populations. Instead of depleting natural resources, Rappahannock reintroduces oysters to the water, enhancing the health of our coastal ecosystems.

Their approach to farming includes elevating oysters off the bay floor using floating bags and cages. This technique promotes healthier growth and improves oyster quality by protecting them from predators and sediment. Additionally, Rappahannock collaborates closely with hatcheries to cultivate oysters with distinctive characteristics, ensuring a thriving and sustainable environment for both the oysters and coastal ecosystems.

The Art of Oyster Farming

Oysters are naturally one of the most sustainable seafood options due to their ability to filter water and maintain balanced ecosystems. Rappahannock Oyster Company further supports this sustainability through responsible farming practices, ensuring that their operations enhance rather than deplete marine environments. Their farming methods contribute to a balanced ecosystem by minimizing bycatch and employing practices that replenish the water.

Each oyster can filter around 50 gallons of water daily, removing algae and plankton that might otherwise harm aquatic life. This natural filtration supports healthier marine ecosystems and aids in the restoration of habitats impacted by human activity.

Additionally, the color and shape of each oyster’s shell are influenced by the wave action and environmental conditions where they are grown. This “merroir” – the essence of the sea – allows each oyster to offer a unique flavor profile that reflects its origin.

Let’s Toast to Sustainability

In celebration of National Oyster Day, we’re offering $1 Rappahannock oysters ALL DAY LONG. This special promotion is our way of sharing the exceptional quality and sustainability of Rappahannock’s oysters with you. Each oyster you enjoy supports the hard work and dedication of the Rappahannock team and contributes to the health of our oceans.
